Check list to get ready for the Fair 2006
Cloverbuds at the fair:
--- Cloverbuds may display their work at the fair. There is a limit of one per member or one display per club.
--- Max size of posters are 14” x 22” or ½ posterboard. Please no food or live animals for display.
--- Buds will not be interviewed or judged.
--- Exhibits are to be brought in on during Judging Tues, July 25, Wed, July 26

Before you are judged at pre-fair judging
 Read over your project book, know any particular vocabulary, bring your book with you to judging.
 Make sure you have the fair requirements sheet that inserted in the front of your project book when you got your book. IF you don’t have the requirement sheet, look on line at the project guide book.
http://greene.osu.edu/4h/4h.htm#top
 Prepare an opening statement. Usually the judge will ask you first to tell him/her about your project. Here you state what you did and how you liked your project.
 For most pre-fair judging, you may wear your Splash T-shirt, nice shorts or jeans or slacks. A collared shirt is better. Wear dressier clothes for Nutrition and Clothing projects, shooting sports (w/judge) and Creative Writing. You can’t over dress.
 You will not need the advisor’s grade sheet we gave you at the club for pre-fair judging. This is for your benefit only. The judge has your letter grade from what I’ve turned into the Extension office.
 After you are judged you will receive a voucher to claim your wrist band - ask for one if they forget to give you one. (see * below)
 For judging, enter the fairgrounds in the West Entrance off Fairgrounds Road. Park in the lot West of the Assembly Building

Once your interview is over with the judge (who is a very nice, encouraging person who is interested in what you have done), you will leave your exhibit there, take your project book and other equipment with you. Get your voucher. Pick up your wrist band.
* Take your wristband voucher to the Fair office outside window. Have your wrist band put on for free admission to the fair. Cloverbuds get in free anyway and can wear a band if they want to. (Fair admission is $6 for all 10 and older). Wristband schedule: 7/25,Tues 9-4, Wed 9-4, Thurs – none, Fri 9-4, Sat 9-4

If your project was judged during prefair, you may receive a letter in the mail before fair starts notifying you of an award. Look closely to your instructions. The letter will state the project and your placing and even state fair if you qualified. (If you do not receive a letter that still does not mean you didn’t place. )

You will find out how you did for most pre-fair projects when the fair opens Sunday. (some projects require more judging during fair and you obviously won’t know until after that). If you discover something about a member’s project before they do, don’t spill the beans! Let them see for themselves - half the fun is seeing your own handiwork on display for others!

Check the pre-fair schedule below and see who is on the fairgrounds with you. Perhaps you can find a fellow Splash member and wish them well in their judging. OR get with another family to swim next door at the pool, car pool, do Taco Bell or Oasis, or do a picnic at the shelter nearby. Celebrate a job well done!

Parking Passes are for sale to park in the lot next to the Assembly Building - $35 for the week. If you have many projects, or many events, you may want to consider this. I did it most years and it shaved at least 10 minutes off our time getting there plus I could keep lunch and things handy in the van,

Preparing for Fair contests (nuta-stars, baking, etc):
 If you registered for a Jr. Fair contest (first aid follies, baking, demonstrations, etc.), know the requirements http://greene.osu.edu/4h/PG%20Section%20I%20-%20General%20Info.pdf
the contest times: http://greene.osu.edu/4h/fair.htm Click on Judging schedule.
You should receive this in the mail from the extension office.
 If you didn’t register for a contest by July 10, you may call and ask to be added to the list (372-9971) if room permits.
 Some contests do not have pre registration and instead have signups during the fair ( photo fun, open modeling, etc.). See the Fair Guide for sign up dates and times of these. http://greene.osu.edu/4h/PG%20Section%20I%20-%20General%20Info.pdf
 All livestock members are required to attend the Skill-A-Thons on July 16th. 2-5
 Dog show this year will be pre-fair Sat, 22nd, 9:30am

Consider entering in Open Class
__ Open class is an area of arts and crafts where anyone, not just 4-hers can enter. Do you (any age) have a favorite quilt or photograph or recipe to enter? You may want to try this option. This is held in the Mercantile Building and you win premium money for each placing. The deadline to register is July 22 and you bring in your articles during prefair or baked goods during fair. The County fair guide has all the dates/ times. Call me if and I can look up a category for you if you like.

If you enter enough and win, you could win back your entry fee. For 4-h members, it is $10, for adults $25 and it does give you a fair pass for the week. This is something to consider if you are going to be at the fair 4 times or more and have to pay admission. (you may also just buy a fair pass for $25 for the week)
Pick up a fair guide at the library or the fair office for entry info. See Page 15, 2nd Department.

While at the fair:
 If you win first place or receive and award, prepare to attend an awards ceremony one evening at the fair for your category. You will receive a letter in the mail for any awards you get for your pre-fair judging. If you do not receive a letter but your project displays “award winner”, check in the 4-H office in the Assembly Building to see when your award night is….. Come to the ceremony, sit in the audience. Wait for your name will be called and you walk across a stage to receive your trophy/ medallion. Go off stage and stay to have your picture taken for the Gazette.
 If you are eligible to attend the State Fair - congratulations! - You will need to get your state fair packet from the 4-H office (located near the restrooms in the Assembly Building). Please return the necessary info to them promptly as they need to let the State Fair office know. (We get Honor Points if returned promptly.) More state fair judging requirements and schedules are found at: http://www.ohio4h.org/
 Meat pen projects (broilers, turkeys, rabbits) should post a thank you sign on their cages (peck-proof) to recognize last year’s buyer.
 You may pick up your award money from the fair office window during office hours. You receive premium money based on your advisor’s grade combined with the judge’s grade. A is $1.25, B is $1.00 and C is $.75. If you do not pick it up, it should be mailed to you. (A+B=A they always take the higher grade of the two.)
 Bairds and Clays are camping at the fair.
After the Fair:
 --- Pick up your displays / posters, ribbons on Saturday Aug 5 from 8-9 pm and Sunday, Aug 6 from 10 to 2. If you cannot be there, have someone pick them up for you. Open Class entries (see fair guide) can be picked up as well. You will need your tickets to claim your items. If someone else picks up for you, be sure they have your claim tickets.
 --- Before you spend your premium money, be sure to write a thank you note to all donors of your prizes & ribbons. Many companies, groups and individuals have donated awards to the Jr. Fair (4-H). Please write them a thank you note. THIS IS IMPORTANT. The addresses should be on each award, if not, try the phone book, Internet, or call the Extension Office 372-9971. From the 8 trophies we donated, our club received 2 thank you notes last year.

Selected 2006 Fair Events Involving Splash Members
Taken from: http://greene.osu.edu/4h/fair.htm Judging Schedule
Location of judging is either in the Assembly hall, or the Fairboard Office Annex Room.. Come to the fairgrounds a bit early to find your site. If you have a scheduling conflict, check in at one point, tell them you have another judging and ask to come back, then check into your other point and tell them you have another judging too. They are flexible and can work it out. It happens all the time - but you DO have to check in on time to let them know, don’t just show up late.
Horse Show Arena is reached from the East end of the Fairgrounds. Turn on Catherine Street at the 4-way stop on Fairground Rd. which is east of the race track.
Livestock projects – check your own schedule - this is not complete for horses nor livestock.

Most of all ….enjoy the fair! Look at possibilities for next year too.
I hope everyone has a good experience to help “make the best better”!
